A Craftsman With Poor Tools

Ben Vitale

I have received many valuable words of wisdom, from my father, that I carry with me every day of my life. As I look back in retrospect I can recall the only bad advice that my father ever gave me! "It's not the quality of the tools, that makes the craftsman; it's the quality of the craftsman." At the time, this sounded right, so I went out and spent five dollar for a Rock Maple Wooden Miter Box, and a Back Saw. With my newly purchased tools I set out to "do a molding job."

It was only a few days ago, that I accidentally "ran into," the last remnant of my less than professional woodworking that was created with the "el Cheepo Tools," that my father spoke so highly of. Yes indeed, "it is not the tools, it is the craftsman." Right! Attached are a few photo of that endeavor.

That's OK the curtain will hide it!

Oh It's only a small chip!

That's only an Inside corner!
No one will see it!

It wasn't like that yesterday!
Must be Mice!

Why is the lower piece wider than the top piece?

I became a little suspicions when my friends appeared to be choking when I showed them the fruits of my newly purchased "El Cheepo," Wooden miter Box. Well my Father told me that the tools didn't matter; it was the craftsman! Wow this is not so easy. I then proceeded to destroy the rest of my house with these "El Cheepo Tools."

Finally while drinking lots of beer, I had an epiphany! I saw a vision of myself in an episode of "This Old House!" So what the heck; I went out and slowly purchased a complete set of professional carpentry tools! As I saw Norm Abram using a tool, I immediately went out and purchased that tool; even if I actually didn't need it! After many episodes of encouragement from Norm Abram, and twelve hundred dollars worth of tools, I was finally ready to try again!

Dad I love you, and I always treasure your advice, but look what I did with "Mucho Expensive Tools." Attached are photos of my second generation construction efforts.

Looks a lot better!

Can't even slide a razor into the joint!

Look Dad, no chips!

Not bad for "Mucho Expensive Tools!"

Thank You Norm
Thank You Dad
